Court records are documents generated during legal proceedings, such as criminal case files, bankruptcy records, and records from family or probate court. These records contain information about legal proceedings, including names of involved parties, hearing dates, testimony and evidence, and rulings in cases. Court records are kept on-site for a time and then disposed of or archived. Most are considered public records, though some may be sealed or have information redacted when copies are provided to the public. The current Clerk of Circuit Court, Civil Sessions Court, and Juvenile Court is Charles D. Susano III.

Knox County provides online access to County Circuit and Civil Sessions records via the KnoxCircuit Records portal. Available circuit records date back April 14, 2015 and civil sessions to October 4, 2017. No Juvenile Court records are included in this database. While KnoxCircuit Records is part of an ongoing effort to increase public access to court records, the service is only available by subscription. A three-month subscription costs $120 and there is a $2.50 service fee for credit card processing. Copies may be made directly from the website with a subscription.

Requests for court records may also be made in person at the Clerk’s Office or by phone. The cost of those copies is $1 per page. When requesting copies of court records, the information needed to identify the records may include: the full name of the plaintiff and/or defendant; any other names case could be filed under, such as that of an attorney or business involved in the case; case number; a date range during which the record was filed; and the document type. It may also be useful to indicate the specific need the request is meant to fill and if the copies of the record should be certified or not. Certified records are stamped by the custodian of records to indicate they are true copies of the originals.

The Clerk’s Office is located on the main entrance floor of the City County Building. They may be reached by phone at 865-215-2429. Office hours are weekdays from 8am to 4:30pm.
